Today Is the Whole Assignment

This is the last of the seven and I want to end where this site started, which is with something very small.

You do not need another plan.

You have had plans. You have had extremely good ones, some of them designed by people who genuinely knew what they were doing. The plan has never been the missing piece, and if a plan were going to solve it, one of the ones you already had would have.

What you need is to get through today without hating yourself, and then to do that again tomorrow, and for nobody to turn that into a plan with a name.

So this article has nothing in it about the future. That is not an oversight and it is not me running out of material. It is the whole point, and it is the only honest place a site like this could end.

He draws the line at the end of the day

There is a sentence at the end of the most famous passage about worry in the Bible, and it does something surprisingly practical.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. (Matthew 6:34, King James Version)

Sufficient unto the day.

He is not telling people to be carefree. Look at what He actually says: today has enough in it. That is not a cheerful sentiment, it is a realistic assessment. This day, on its own, already contains a full measure.

And so the instruction is a boundary rather than an attitude. Do not carry tomorrow's load in addition to today's, because today already came fully loaded, and Matthew 6:34 says so plainly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as permission rather than as another spiritual standard to reach.

You are only ever given a day at a time, and God has never once handed anybody a week. Matthew 6:34 says sufficient unto the day, which is a boundary drawn around one day rather than a mood, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person stop carrying a load that has not arrived.

You have been given a day and not a series, and no day of yours has ever once been handed over as an installment. Matthew 6:34 says take no thought for the morrow, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a boundary like that feel like relief rather than a fence.

Why every plan closes on tomorrow

Now, why does this matter so much on this particular subject, and why does Matthew 6:34 keep coming back to one day, and why is the Holy Spirit so unhurried about all of it.

Because every plan you have ever been given, however kindly, had its center of gravity in the future. That is what a plan is. And so the moment you take one on, today stops being a day and becomes day one, and a day one is not something you live, it is something you either maintain or break.

And then something ordinary happens on the Tuesday, and the plan is broken, and now the whole thing has failed, and the shame arrives, and the shame is out of all proportion to the ordinary thing that happened.

Matthew 6:34 dismantles that structure at the root, because it refuses to let tomorrow have a claim on today at all, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hold a person in a single day without them immediately trying to extend it.

You are living a day rather than keeping a record going, and today has never once been the first of anything. The written word says the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself, which hands tomorrow back to itself, and the Spirit of God is the one who can give somebody a day with no chain attached to it.

You are not being asked to sustain anything, and there has never once been a chain attached to the day in front of you. The written word says sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, and the Spirit of God is the one who can give somebody a single day and mean it.

The kindness is the instruction

So the whole assignment is one small kind thing, today.

I want to say what I mean by kind, because it is not what people expect. It is not a treat and it is not a reward, both of which are still transactions.

Matthew 6:34 does not ask for a plan and the Holy Spirit is not building one here. Kind means the sort of thing you would do without thinking for somebody you loved who was tired. Sitting down properly to eat something. Going to bed before you are wrecked. Wearing the comfortable thing. Not looking at the photograph again. Standing outside for two minutes. Saying no to something.

You know exactly what it is for you. You have known for years, and you have not done it, because it did not seem like enough to count as doing something.

It is not supposed to be enough. It is supposed to be today, which is exactly the size Matthew 6:34 draws the line at, and the Holy Spirit has never once asked for the day after it.

You are able to be kind to yourself in something small, and it has never once needed to be part of a larger thing. Matthew 6:34 draws the line at the end of the day and asks for nothing beyond it, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes something small enough to actually do.

You have one day in your hands, and it has never once been an installment on a future one. Matthew 6 is the written word where tomorrow is handed back to itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a kind day from turning into the start of something.
