Not a Report Card

There is a belief underneath a great deal of this that almost nobody says out loud, and I am going to say it, because it cannot be answered while it stays unspoken.

The belief is: my body is a public document about my character.

Not health. Not comfort. A document. Something that other people read and draw conclusions from, and the conclusions are moral ones: about discipline, about self-control, about whether I am the kind of person who has their life in order.

And once that belief is in place, every mirror becomes a proofreading exercise and every photograph becomes a filed copy, and worst of all, God becomes another reader of the document.

That last part is the one I have come to take apart today.

And before anything else, the thing that gets left out. You have not been careless about this. You have worked at it for years, in ways nobody watching would guess, and you have gotten up again every single time. A person who reads their own body as a moral document is not a person who stopped caring. They are a person who has cared, hard, for a very long time.

He says it about the reading, not the man

There is a moment where the prophet Samuel is doing exactly what you do, and God interrupts him mid-thought.

Samuel is looking for a king. The eldest son walks in, tall and impressive, and Samuel thinks: obviously this one. And before he can say it, this comes.

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7, King James Version)

Notice what God is correcting. He is not correcting the son. He is correcting the way of reading.

Man looketh on the outward appearance. That is not condemned as wicked, it is simply named as what people do. And then the contrast: the LORD looketh on the heart. Not as a consolation, not as a second-best form of seeing. As the actual method.

You are not being looked at the way Samuel was looking, and God has never once done His seeing from the outside in. First Samuel 16:7 says the LORD looketh on the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves that from a verse somebody quotes to a place somebody stands.

And this cuts both ways, which is the part that gets missed. It is usually preached at people who are impressed by appearance. It is just as true for people who are condemned by their own.

You are being read by somebody who is not reading the outside, and the LORD has never once used the method you use on yourself. First Samuel 16:7 says the LORD seeth not as man seeth, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a relief rather than a technicality, because the seeing He does is not the seeing you have been bracing for.

You are not on file anywhere as a case, and God has never once read a frame as a record of a life. First Samuel 16:7 says the Lord looketh on the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a place to stand rather than a verse to quote.

Where the moral frame came from

Now, where did the idea come from that a body is a character reference?

Not from Scripture. There is no verse anywhere that reads a person's size as a report on their soul. The Bible is remarkably uninterested in the subject, and 1 Samuel 16:7 is one of several places where the Holy Spirit actively refuses to let appearance do that work.

It came from a culture that sells things. It arrived through advertising and through a hundred small comments, and it got reinforced every time somebody praised a change in a body as though a moral improvement had occurred, which is a thing people do constantly and kindly and without any idea what they are doing.

And you absorbed it, and then you applied it to yourself far more harshly than you would ever apply it to another person, which is how you can look at somebody you love and think nothing of the kind.

You have been running a rule you would never use on anybody else, and God has never once handed anybody that rule. First Samuel 16:7 refuses appearance as a way of assessing a person out loud and in the middle of choosing a king, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes down a frame that was never built by anybody holy.

You have been read by somebody who does not read the outside, and there has never once been a moral frame in His reading. The written word says man looketh on the outward appearance but the Lord looketh on the heart, and the Spirit of God is the one who removes a frame without installing a better one.

Nothing replaces it

I want to be careful about what I do next, because there is a version of this message that swaps one document for another, and it does damage.

The wrong version says: your body is not a report card, your heart is. And then a person walks away auditing their interior instead, which is not freedom, it is the same anxiety relocated somewhere harder to inspect.

That is not what the verse does. The LORD looketh on the heart is not an invitation for you to look at your heart. It is a statement about who is doing the looking and where His attention rests, and the point is that the looking is His job.

So nothing is being installed today. The frame comes down and nothing goes up in its place, and if that feels like standing in an empty room for a while, that is what it is supposed to feel like.

You are not being handed a different thing to be graded on, and the looking has never once been yours to do. The written word says the LORD looketh on the heart, which puts the work with Him rather than with you, and the Spirit of God is the one who can leave a wall bare without a person needing to fill it.

You are not required to swap one frame for another today, and nothing has ever once had to go into the space where that one was. First Samuel 16 is the written word where God declines the outward reading entirely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can leave a space empty and make it restful.
