Nobody Kept the Count

I want to talk about the part everybody misses, which is not the trying. It is the starting.

Ask most people what is hard about this and they will say the evenings, or the middle of the second week. But that is not what I hear from the people who have been at this the longest. What they say, when they say it honestly, is that the dread arrives before anything has begun.

Because starting is not a fresh thing for you. It has a history. It comes with an attached file of every previous time you started, and how each of those went, and roughly when each one stopped. And so beginning again is not stepping onto a clear road. It is walking back into a building where you already have a reputation.

That is a different and much heavier thing than lacking discipline, and almost nobody names it, and I think naming it does a great deal.

The question that ends the accounting

There is a short line in the Psalms that I have watched change how people carry themselves.

If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? (Psalm 130:3, King James Version)

Mark, there, is a bookkeeping word. It means to keep the record. To make the entry.

And the question is not rhetorical decoration. It is a real question with an obvious answer: nobody. If God kept an itemized record, nobody would be standing at all, including the very best person you have ever met.

Then the next verse says: but there is forgiveness with thee. That is Psalm 130:4, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a sentence that short land on somebody who has been keeping their own books for years.

The point is not that your record is short. The point is that there is no ledger. Not a small one, not a merciful one, not one where the entries are forgiven but still listed. The accounting is not being done.

You are not standing in front of a record, and there has never once been a tally to answer for. Psalm 130:3 asks who could stand if the entries were kept and answers that nobody could, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person put down a file they have been carrying for years.

You have no file open anywhere, and the record you have been answering to has never once existed in heaven. Psalm 130:3 asks who could stand if the Lord marked iniquities, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an unanswerable question feel like an open door.

Where your file actually came from

Now, if God is not keeping it, who is?

You are. And you built it out of the best of motives, which is what makes it hard to spot. Every time something stopped, you did what a conscientious person does: you worked out why. And that reason went into the file, and the file got heavier, and by now you have a genuinely detailed understanding of your own past failures, and you can produce it on demand. You would call that self-awareness. And here is the thing I want to say gently: it stopped being self-awareness a long time ago and became a case for the prosecution, and you are running both sides of it.

The evidence is real. That is not in question. What is in question is who told you that a person is required to carry their own evidence around, because Psalm 130:3 did not, and neither did the Holy Spirit.

You are not required to be your own prosecutor, and God has never once asked anybody to keep a file on themselves. The written word says there is forgiveness with thee, which places the record in His hands rather than in yours, and the Spirit of God is the one who closes a case that nobody upstairs was pursuing.

You were never handed a ledger to keep, and no attempt of yours has once been written down against you. The written word says if the Lord should mark iniquities nobody could stand, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a tally out of somebody's hands.

This is not a relaunch

I need to be very plain, because you have read a hundred pages that looked like this one and ended somewhere else. I am not building up to a fresh start. There is no plan at the bottom of this page. I am not going to name a day, or suggest a small first step, or ask you to try one more time with a better attitude.

If I did that, I would just be adding one more entry to the file, and I would be doing it in the name of God, which is worse. Psalm 130:3 closes the book rather than reopening it at a clean page, and the Holy Spirit does not reset ledgers, He removes them.

The entire point of today is that the count is closed. Not paused so you can have a clean run at it. Closed. What you do or do not do about anything else is genuinely not what this page is for.

You are not being started again, and today has never once been the beginning of another attempt. Psalm 130:3 removes the ledger rather than resetting it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hand somebody relief without immediately asking them for something.

You are not resuming anything, and there has never once been a record for you to pick back up. Psalm 130 is the written word where the marking is what God does not do, and the Holy Spirit is the one who ends an accounting instead of adjusting it.
