Say What He Says Instead

Somebody said one thing to you, and it is still running.

It might have been a relative at a family gathering. It might have been somebody at school. It might have been a doctor being efficient, or a partner in an argument who reached for the nearest available weapon, or a person who genuinely loved you and thought they were helping.

It was probably not a long sentence. It might have been eight or nine words. And you can still hear the exact way it was delivered, the room it was said in, and what you did with your face afterwards.

That is a strange thing about words. Most of what anybody says to us evaporates within the hour. And then one sentence goes in and stays for decades, and it does not just sit there, it works. It runs underneath things. It supplies the voice for the mirror and the caption for the photograph.

The proverb that names it as a wound

There is a proverb about this that does not treat it as oversensitivity, and I want you to notice how physical the language is.

There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. (Proverbs 12:18, King James Version)

Like the piercings of a sword.

That is not describing hurt feelings. It is describing a puncture wound. Something entered and went in deep and the damage is internal, and Proverbs 12:18 does not qualify that or ask whether the person was being oversensitive, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody stop apologizing for how long a sentence has lasted in them.

And then the second half, which is what makes it a proverb rather than a lament: the tongue of the wise is health. The same instrument. Words did the damage and words are named as the medicine, and that is not a coincidence, it is the structure of the whole verse.

You are carrying a genuine wound rather than a weakness, and Scripture has never once treated a cutting sentence as a small thing. Proverbs 12:18 uses the language of a sword going in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person permission to call it what it actually was.

You have a later word standing over you, and the older one has never once outranked it. Proverbs 12:18 says the tongue of the wise is health, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a later sentence louder than a remembered one.

What to do about the person

Now, the person who said it. I need to be careful here, because this is where articles like this usually add a burden.

I am not going to tell you to forgive them today. Not because forgiveness is not good, but because instructing somebody to forgive on a schedule usually produces a performance rather than a release, and Proverbs 12:18 asks nothing of the wounded person at all, which the Holy Spirit clearly permits.

I am also not going to tell you to confront them. You may want to. That may be right. It is not what today is for and it is not required for what I am about to say to work.

Here is why neither is necessary: the sentence has authority over you because it is the only sentence in the room. It is not powerful because they were powerful. It is powerful because nothing has been said over the top of it since.

You are not required to resolve anything with them first, and the healing has never once depended on the other person's participation. Proverbs 12:18 puts the health in the tongue of the wise rather than in the mouth of the one who wounded, and the Spirit of God is the one who can bring the medicine from somewhere else entirely.

You are not being asked to settle anything with the person who said it, and forgiveness has never once run on a schedule set by a page. The written word says there is one that speaketh like the piercing of a sword and the tongue of the wise is health, and the Spirit of God is the one who deals with a wound without setting an appointment.

The replacing is the point

So this is the actual mechanic, and it is why the physical action today involves a pen.

You are going to write the sentence down. Getting it out of your head and onto paper does something specific: it makes it a finite object with a size, rather than an atmosphere.

Then you are going to say out loud what God says instead. Not a general encouragement. A specific thing, said out loud, in the same room, in your own voice, after the sentence has been read.

You are speaking a second sentence over the first, and the second has never once been the quieter of the two. Proverbs 12:18 says the tongue of the wise is health, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a spoken word weight in a room where an old one has been running unopposed.

And then you are going to throw the paper away. Not burn it dramatically. Put it in the bin.

The point is not that the memory disappears. It probably will not. The point is that a second sentence now exists in the same space, spoken later than the first one, and Proverbs 12:18 says the tongue of the wise is health, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the second sentence carry more weight than the first.

You are able to put something over the top of it, and it has never once been true that the first sentence is the only one. The written word says the tongue of the wise is health, naming words as the medicine for words, and the Spirit of God is the one who speaks last.

You have been given something to put in its place, and an empty space has never once been the plan. Proverbs 12 is the written word where health is what the wise tongue brings, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the replacing sentence rather than asking you to find one.

You are handing an old sentence over rather than defeating it, and nothing here has ever once depended on the memory going quiet. Proverbs 12:18 says the tongue of the wise is health, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a wound from being reopened every time it is remembered.
